Now, on
0:41
to the show. This
0:52
is Ria. Welcome to Little
0:54
Stories for Tiny People. I've
0:57
dreamed up some characters that I
0:59
care about so much, I just
1:01
want to see what else they
1:03
do in life. Frog
1:06
from Frog and
1:08
Salamander is one of them. He
1:11
takes himself too seriously. He lets his
1:13
ego rule over him. He wants so
1:15
badly to
1:20
be somebody. He is,
1:23
like so many of us, and
1:25
I'm rooting for him. Let's
1:28
see what he's been up to. Our
1:30
story is called Frog
1:32
and Salamander, a third
1:36
chapter. Take it
1:38
away, Beatrix. Remember, there are no pictures.
1:40
You have to imagine them in your
1:43
mind. You can imagine them however you want.
1:45
Okay, here we go. Mr.
1:48
Frog, hello. Something
1:50
nudged against Frog.
2:00
He blinked his eyes, but
2:02
the sun forced them closed.
2:05
His head ached. Mr.
2:09
Frog, I just wanted
2:11
to say congratulations and
2:14
maybe get your autograph? Can't
2:16
this whoever this is take
2:18
a hint? Frog wondered.
2:21
But then his mind turned
2:23
over the word. Congratulations.
2:28
Frog sat up. It
2:30
took a moment for his eyes to
2:32
adjust. The sky was
2:35
a brilliant blue. The
2:37
surface of wormly pond shimmered
2:39
just beyond the boulder on
2:42
which he'd slept, hidden
2:44
beneath a woven leaf blanket.
2:48
Frog's typewriter, the one he'd
2:50
used to write stories over
2:52
the years, both before
2:54
and after he'd
2:57
become a well-known author, sat beside
3:00
him. Frog cradled
3:02
his head. His
3:05
downward gaze settled on
3:07
his tuxedo, a rental,
3:09
he now recalled, from
3:12
Frogadetio's discount formal wear.
3:14
I loved it, Mr.
3:16
Frog. There was that voice
3:18
again. Frog lifted his
3:21
head enough to see a small
3:23
newt. He blinked up
3:25
at him from beside the boulder,
3:28
wearing a sparkly belt and
3:30
a bewildered expression. In
3:32
her claws, she held a
3:35
book. Just loved it, the newt
3:37
said, holding up the hardcover.
3:39
The main character reminded me of
3:41
my father. Really? It
3:43
was Frog's book. His
3:46
latest, The Newt in
3:48
the Nighttime. And oh
3:51
my, Mr. Frog, is that it?
3:53
Is that your award? Award?
3:55
What is this newt talking
3:58
about? in
4:00
the direction of the newt's
4:03
enthusiastic pointing. There, beside
4:05
his typewriter, was a
4:08
golden statue of a fish.
4:11
Frog let go of his head and
4:13
reached for the fish. It
4:15
glinted in the mid-morning
4:17
sun. Below it, on
4:19
its little stand, was
4:22
his own name. After
4:24
years of hoping and
4:28
yearning and envying
4:30
Salamander, who had to have
4:32
won at least six times,
4:35
after all that, Frog
4:37
had won a pond
4:40
award. As he
4:42
held it in his grasp, fragments
4:44
of the previous night trickled
4:47
back. And the winner is
4:50
Frog!
4:52
Again, congratulations on your pond
4:54
award. My aunt thought Salamander
4:57
would win again, but after
4:59
I read the newt in
5:01
the night time, I said,
5:03
it's Frog's year. Frog couldn't
5:05
focus on the newt's prattling.
5:08
The ache in his head became
5:10
a throb, and there was something
5:12
else. A pit in
5:14
his stomach. Something was
5:17
wrong, but he
5:19
had no idea what. And
5:21
your acceptance speech, it brought
5:23
a tear to my eye.
5:25
I said to my sister,
5:27
I'm not crying. You're crying.
5:29
Frog couldn't remember his acceptance
5:31
speech. That's what real
5:33
success looks like, doesn't
5:35
it, Mr. Frog? You must
5:37
feel so fulfilled. Right, Frog
5:40
muttered, thinking vaguely
5:42
that he should
5:45
feel successful and fulfilled.
5:48
He scribbled his name in the newt's
5:50
book, then hopped down
5:52
from his boulder. Thank
5:54
you, Mr. Frog. Oh, and
5:57
I cannot wait to read the...
6:00
worm above the wind. Frog
6:03
had taken a step away into
6:05
the tall pond grass that
6:07
surrounded Wormly Pond, with absolutely
6:09
no idea where he was
6:11
headed, but with what he
6:13
hoped was an air of
6:15
confidence in the presence of
6:17
a fan, but at the
6:20
newt's words he stopped
6:22
and whirled around. The
6:25
worm above the wind, eh? Who's the
6:28
author? Salamander,
6:30
most likely, Frog mused.
6:34
It would be just like Salamander to
6:36
announce a new book right after Frog
6:38
had won a big award. Frog
6:41
clutched his pond award against
6:43
his chest. The newt
6:46
peered at him with a curious
6:48
smile. That's funny. I didn't
6:51
know you were funny. Anyway, thank
6:53
you again, Mr. Frog. With
6:55
that, the newt disappeared into
6:58
the grass. Frog stared
7:00
after her and it was
7:02
backwards. It was the
7:05
wrong way round. He was
7:07
supposed to vanish into the pond
7:09
grass, with the newt looking on
7:11
with admiration. And why
7:14
did that silly title she'd
7:16
mentioned, a worm above
7:18
the wind, seemed so
7:20
familiar. The wind
7:22
mimicked Frog's thoughts, whipping
7:25
in spirals, sending
7:27
the slender reeds into
7:29
wild pirouettes. Something
7:32
was very off about the conversation
7:34
with the newt, but
7:36
Frog couldn't for the life of
7:38
him figure out what it was.
7:41
He heard a rustling and a
7:43
small toad emerge from the grass.
7:46
Frog stood up straight in his
7:48
tuxedo and held his shiny pond
7:50
award in the crook of his
7:52
arm, casually, like
7:55
a famous writer would do, in case
7:57
this was another fan approaching.
8:00
The toad hopped right by Frog without
8:02
so much as a glance in his
8:04
direction. Frog
8:06
was transfixed, not
8:09
by the toad, by
8:11
the radio that blared from
8:13
the toad's waist belt. This
8:17
is an Awards Night edition of
8:19
Books, Bugs, and Boulders. I'm
8:21
Martha Malamar here with Wormley
8:23
Pond's very own Frog, tonight's
8:26
winner of the Pond Award for
8:28
Excellence in Writing. Frog's best-selling novel,
8:31
The Newt in the Night-Time, is
8:33
already being celebrated at... The toad
8:35
hopped away, disappearing into
8:38
the reeds. How
8:40
strange! Frog could
8:42
hardly remember sitting down with
8:45
Martha Malamar last night. Frog
8:47
was frozen in place by the shock of
8:49
it. The sound of the
8:52
radio faded into the sounds of
8:54
pond life. Frog
8:56
forced his legs to
8:59
unstick, and he followed the
9:01
toad through the reeds. It
9:04
was awkward to hop in
9:06
his tuxedo, and the gnawing
9:08
feeling in his tummy had worsened.
9:11
But he knew there was something else
9:13
besides the Pond Award. Something
9:17
he couldn't remember. Something
9:20
not good. Frog
9:23
launched himself forward to
9:26
find out the truth
9:28
about his forgotten night.
