Welcome to the Irish Military History Podcast!

This is brand new podcast series that will explore Ireland’s boundlessly rich military history, and will examine the unique social and cultural history of the Irish at war.

Every fortnight, we will release an episode covering a unique aspect of this amazingly diverse and fascinating history, and will share with you the remarkable personal stories of Irish people, men and women, soldiers and civilians, who experienced war and conflict on these shores, and far beyond…

And when we say far beyond, we mean global. We will follow Ireland’s military story to the far corners of the earth, accompanying Irishmen and women who served in the armies, navies and air forces of Britain, France, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in conflicts all over the world.

And that’s just the modern era… we’re also going to march into battle alongside Irish emigrant soldiers who went into foreign service on the continent of Europe during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, following the stories of Irish troops who enrolled in the service of Britain, France, Spain, the Papal States, Austria, Prussia and even Russia.

We will also be delving into domestic military history, interrogating the history of Ireland’s many centuries of rebellions, uprisings, wars and revolutions, spanning from the Middle Ages right up to the Twentieth Century, which mark out the course of the long Irish struggle for independence and freedom from English and British rule.

But so too will we be taking an interest in the experience of British, and other foreign personnel, who served in Ireland during various periods, and how they interacted with the Irish population. We will cast light, not just on the flashpoints of conflict and violence that define the relationship between the Irish people and their foreign occupiers, but also the special moments of cohesion and of friendship that ultimately led to the development of Irish society, and that changed the course of Irish history.

In short, we have an endless list of topics to explore!
